Examines the filiations of five manuscripts of Antonio De Beatis's journal of the European travels of Cardinal Luigi d'Aragona, May 1517-Feb 1518; and transcribes and analyzes references to paintings by Leonardo, whom the party visited at Cloux, 10 Oct 1517. On the basis of a reference to a portrait of "la Gualanda", taken in conjunction with references by Lomazzo and Irpino, argues that the Mona Lisa (Paris, Louvre) is not a portrait of the wife of Francesco del Giocondo painted in Florence, 1500-1504, as stated by Vasari, and proposes instead that it is a portrait of one Isabella Gualandi, a Neapolitan lady whose identity is here carefully reconstructed, painted in Rome, 1513-15, for Giuliano de'Medici.
