Abstract (en)
Reports the medical opinion published by Jan V. Dequeker (Canadian Medical Association Journal, 1981, 124 (15 June), p. 1597-1598) that the portrait of van der Paele in the Madonna with Canon van der Paele by Jan van Eyck (Bruges, Groeningemuseum) reveals that he suffered from temporal arteritis and polymyalgia rheumatica, which would account for documentary evidence that he was excused from his ecclesiastical duties and confined to his home for the last years of his life; it also reinforces the theory that the painting remained in the canon's residence during his lifetime.
