Considers the allegorical frontispiece to Diderot's Encyclopédie, designed by Charles-Nicolas Cochin II in 1764 (private collection). Discusses the circumstances surrounding publication of the etching in the 1760s and 1770s. Focuses on the iconography of Cochin's composition.
