Abstract (en)
Discusses Astruc's poem La fille des iles, its sexual implications and relation to Manet's painting Olympia (Paris, Musée d'Orsay). The poem accompanied Manet's entry for Olympia in the 1865 Salon catalogue. Also discusses the possibility that Manet's ca.1877-1881 painting < U> Le Suicidé (E.G. Bührle collection) in some way referred to a piece published by Zola in 1866 about the suicide of artist Jules Holtzapffel. Also reflects on the fact that Manet donated Le Suicidé for an 1881 sale to benefit the dying composer and performer Ernest Cabaner.
