Discusses two recent acts of art censorship in the United States and their implications: the controversy involving Andres Serrano's 1987 photograph Piss Christ and the cancellation of an exhibition of Robert Mapplethorpe's photographs at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. Sees these events as symptoms of a new authoritarianism which seeks to control sexual expression and ultimately sexual behavior. Condemns efforts by conservative congressmen to reduce funding for the National Endowment for the Arts based on moral issues involving religion and sex.
