Abstract (en)
First analytic survey published of earthworks, and radical reappraisal of settlement's history through newly discovered documents. A tentative history can be summarized: unlocated Saxon settlement or settlements; 12th c., hamlet which spread with rising population; probably manor house nearby; expansion of Sheriff Hutton deer park in 14th c.; village demolished in 15th c. and enclosed within park. Describes subsequent development up to the 19th c.
