Asserts that modern art is fueled by a sense of death, unconsciously permeated with it, and that life in the modern world is likewise haunted by death. Examines the presence of death as subject matter and style in 20th c. art, and the way such representations reflect the loss of belief in immortality. Uses psychoanalytic theory to support this thesis. Notes the persistent images of skulls in modern art, including a recent revival of such imagery.
