Supportive review of the controversial 1989 exhibition of western and non-western contemporary art, Magiciens de la terre (Paris, Musée national d'art moderne). Asserts that the show was a major event in the social history of art, the first major exhibition consciously to attempt to discover a post-colonialist way to exhibit first- and third-world objects together. Contrasts the premises of the show with the equally controversial 1984 exhibition, Primitivism in 20th century art (New York, Museum of Modern Art).
