Abstract (en)
Since portraits are often handed down from generation to generation it should be possible to identify an anonymous portrait by compiling a chart of all the ancestors of the earliest known owner and checking whether one of these fits the sitter. Illustrates this method of research with some Dutch painted portraits of the 17th and 18th cs.
