Surveys paintings of one single figure and categorizes them into genres with their own pictorial tradition, such as history painting, genre painting, the study of a head or "tronie", and the portrait. Focuses on Rembrandt and argues that a number of his paintings showing the artist or members of his family are not portraits but belong to other traditions.
