Iconographic analysis of Kahlo's 1937 painting, Memory (private collection), here compared to a religious icon created to illustrate a scene in the life and passion of the artist. Proposes that Kahlo's iconography follows Saint Teresa of Avila's description of her Transverberation (the piercing of her heart by the arrow of Divine Love) combined with symbolic references to the artist's personal life, loves, and suffering. Highlights parallels in the lives of the saint and the artist.
