Chronicles the history of the Quadriga, a late 18th c. monumental sculpture by Johann Gottfried Schadow on the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin, which was badly damaged during World War II. Focuses on political issues involved with its reconstruction in the 1950s. Notes the patriotic symbolism of the Iron Cross and Prussian Eagle which are held aloft by the Victory figure, and cites East and West German views for and against their inclusion in the reconstructed sculpture.
