Discusses the work of independent craftsmen who produced figured and fancy coverlets and ingrain carpets ca.1810s-1850s. Argues that the barrel loom may have been an intermediate step in the development of fancy hand-weaving technology. Appended technical descriptions of the drawloom, barrel loom and Jacquard attachment.
