Discusses a painting by Van Dyck which has recently been discovered in a family collection in the Low Countries. Argues that the picture depicts George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, and his future wife, Katherine Manners, in the roles of Adonis and Venus. Seeks to demonstrate that the work was commissioned by Villiers and painted by Van Dyck during the latter's first English visit, 1620-1621. Discusses iconography and traces provenance.
