On the basis of a letter written by Thomas Locke in London to William Trumbull in Brussels, establishes that Van Dyck first arrived in London in Oct 1620--a month earlier than previously supposed. Also shows that it was John Villiers, 1st Viscount Purbeck, who brought the artist to London, perhaps acting at the behest of his younger brother, George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham. The Arundels had been given sole credit for attracting Van Dyck to England.
