Review of the recent exhibition The blues aesthetic: black culture and modernism, at Washington Project for the Arts, Washington, DC, curated by Rick Powell. The exhibition featured works in a wide variety of media, 1910s-1980s, mainly by Afro-American artists but including works by non-blacks, which reflect the connections between black music, black life, and American intercultural influence and exchange.
