Abstract (en)
Discusses the portraits: a drawing of 1518 (Vienna, Albertina), a woodcut of ca.1518-1519, and two paintings of 1519 and ca.1520-1521 respectively (Vienna, Kunsthistorisches Museum, and Nuremberg, Germanisches Nationalmuseum). Asks what it meant to Dürer to draw the emperor from life, and how this drawing was used to make subsequent versions. Considers related questions of function and dating, utilizing data from technical examination of the paintings and drawing.
