Reviews the exhibition Childe Hassam: An island garden revisited (Washington, National Museum of American Art) which includes pastels, watercolors and paintings made from 1884 during Hassam's visits to Appledore Island. Reviewer discusses Hassam's relationship with Appledore resident Celia Thaxter. Hassam made many views of Thaxter's cottage garden and illustrated her 1894 book An island garden.
