Analyzes the exhibition catalogue, arguing it presented Jews as capable of being assimilated into British society. Contrasts this attitude to those expressed in contemporary government hearings aimed at restricting alien immigration. Concludes that the purpose of the exhibition was to encourage the so-called uncivilized, foreign-looking, poor and uneducated Jews of London's East End to accept the standards set by the English middle classes, and to make a version of Jewishness which would be compatible with Englishness.
