Surveys social attitudes toward smoking and women smokers and the reflection of these in 19th and early 20th c. pictorial art, mainly prints, posters, and cartoons. Notes that three women artists--the printmaker Jane Atché, the painter Louise Lavrut, and the photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston--departed from the traditional negative imagery of women smokers.
