Documents recently discovered in the Archivio di Stato di Lucca enable the author to date the beginnings of Baratta's career to 1692 (his earliest known work has been a piece of 1722), and to attribute to him the statues of S. Paolino and S. Frediano (S. Paul and S. Frigidian) on the inner facade of S. Croce dei Lucchesi, Rome. The two sculptures had previously been given to a follower of Camillo Rusconi.
