Argues that the historian of art is not merely a detached, scientific spectator but becomes involved with and influenced by the object of art that is studied. Relates these ideas to art criticism. Draws examples from the art of the Renaissance to the present, such as works by Raphael, Velázquez, Chardin, Courbet, Manet and Magritte, and from the writings of Jacob Burckhardt, Friedrich Nietzsche, Michel Foucault and others.
