Discusses the photographic quality of Degas's 1879 Portrait of Diego Martelli (Edinburgh, National Gallery of Scotland). Notes that Martelli, like Degas, was much interested in photography. Martelli was photographed by the Alinari ca.1870 and wrote a tribute to them in 1891.
