Explores the significance of Gauguin's sojourn in Tahiti against the larger background of the European experience of Tahiti as recorded by Wallis (1767) and Bougainville (1771) and popularized in 19th c. guidebooks and exhibitions. Gauguin's search for a new imagery of the female nude, a "Tahitian Eve" whose body is sexualized without sin, is examined in relation to issues of exoticism, primitivism, colonialism, and sexuality.
