Abstract (en)
Survey of the development of forms of heraldry and paraheraldry in late Medieval and early Renaissance Europe, focusing on Italy. Presents evidence suggesting that the 1360s was the period in which stable badges and devices not associated with the orders began to be adopted, and points to the royal court of England as the place where the custom originated.
