Abstract (en)
Interprets the iconography of the fresco of the Rule of the Antichrist in the Cappella Nuova of the cathedral of Orvieto in light of the sermons of S. Vincent Ferrer, noting Signorelli's concern with the promotion of church power and his anxiety about contemporary disorder in papal Orvieto. Concludes that the message of the Antichrist fresco and related grisailles is that the defeat of tyranny will come only in the Last Days, that temporal authority is fated to follow in the path of Roman absolutism, and that only complete surrender to the authority of the Church offers hope to a world torn by conflict.
