Abstract
(en)
Studies Bernini's sculpture, its subject (here interpreted as union with God at the moment of death), its relationship to contemporary theological thought, and its context in the history and decoration of the Altieri chapel (Rome, S. Francesco a Ripa). Also casts light on the politics of canonization and its impact on the patronage of the lay patrician class in Rome to which the Albertoni/Altieri belonged.
