Abstract
(en)
Analyzes the depictions of a marble throne and a Greek stele in three manuscripts of Cosmas Indicopleustes's Christian topography (Vatican, Biblioteca vaticana, MS Vat. gr. 699; Florence, Biblioteca Medicea-Laurenziana, MS plut. IX; Sinai, monastery of S. Catherine, Library, MS gr. 1186), all copies of a lost 6th c. prototype. Identifies the location of the monuments as the pre-Christian Axumite city of Aduli, where Cosmas was invited to record Greek inscriptions. Dates the stele to the 3d c. B.C. and the throne to the 1st-3d c. A.D.
