Abstract
(en)
Discusses stylistic and iconographic incongruities in the reliefs of the 12th c. doors, the work of two or three different masters, and their relationship to the surrounding stone portal, by Nicolò (Nicholaus). Hypothesizes that the original design of the church included a westwork that would have placed the bronze doors and Nicolò's portal on two different planes. Suggests that the problem of chronology should be addressed by using formal models appropriate to bronze reliefs, which are closer to painting or to goldwork than to monumental sculpture.
