Studies on sepulchral monuments in Italy, chiefly 11th-13th cs., including: an introductory essay on the devaluation of the ancient funeral monument in Early Christian times; the earliest Norman dynastic tombs in the abbey church of SS. Trinità, Venosa; the 12th c. papal tombs in S. Giovanni in Laterano, Rome; the first gisant tombs in Italy (13th c.); the Medieval revival of ancient monumental symbolism as an expression of personal and political authority.
