1989 excavation was undertaken to discover more information about postulated Saxon timber church. No trace was found. Full ground plan of apse was discovered, and remains of later chancel reconstructed in the later 13th or 14th c. Outlines later building history in 18th and 19th cs. Church preserves much of its medieval seven cant scissor roof, datable 13th to 14th cs. Notable find was window reveal from the romanesque church.
