Abstract (en)
Considerable number and variety of monuments survive as evidence of human activity in the area since Neolithic times. The area of Broad Stone (court tomb) was examined in advance of development. A possible round house may be of Early Christian date. Abandoned upland field system, of uncertain date but perhaps of the same period as a sub-rectangular structure identified as a dwelling and radiocarbon-dated to ca.1511-1608. Everted rim pottery, native Irish, was found in and around the house and in the body of the wall. Latest occupation may have continued as late as the second quarter of the 17th c., so possibly extending the date range for both house and pottery types.
