Abstract
(en)
Examines the conditions that led to the emergence of the nude as a respectable genre in British exhibition painting, and its elevation to a high cultural status. Defines the nude socially and theoretically and examines the ideological frameworks within which representations of the male and female body were constructed, as well as contexts of display and the competing interests of differing audiences. Looks at contemporary art theory, codes of representation and the status of the nude in British art education. Includes checklist of exhibited nude subjects.
