Abstract (en)

The Ritz Hotel (1904-1905), designed by Mewès and Davis, and Selfridge's department store (1906-1909), the first large building in London to fully exploit steel-frame and reinforced concrete construction (executed by R.F. Atkinson to an original design by Daniel Burnham of Chicago), drew attention to modern American methods of structural engineering and effectively influenced London building regulations.
