Discusses issues raised by "The future of art," an international conference on aesthetics and the philosophy of art held in Lahti in August 1990. Suggests several possible scenarios for the death of art, including passive euthanasia (loss of interest and importance), active euthanasia (suicidal action within the institution itself), and "murder" by an outsider, as in any instance where art is forced to serve another area of human activity, such as politics, religion, or science.
