Survey of fortifications in Italian cities in the 19th c., from the projects directed by Chasseloup-Laubat during the Napoleonic occupation (e.g., Alessandria), and the Piedmontese, and Austrian strongholds that succeeded these, to the military architecture and general plans for the defense of Italy following unification. Finally, discusses the demolition and construction of walls in European capitals at the end of the century.
