Considers architects' responses to the State Department's Foreign Buildings Office program guidelines: to consider local conditions of climate and site; to consider the historical meaning of the particular environment; to consider new techniques and new materials; and to design with a distinguishable American flavor. Looks at 12 embassy and consulate buildings: Accra, Athens, Baghdad, Bangkok, Dublin, The Hague, Karachi, London, New Delhi, Oslo, Tabriz and Tangier.
