Abstract (en)
Studies Michelangelo's practical and aesthetic responses to the specific conditions of S. Lorenzo when he was commissioned in 1524 (by Clement VII) to situate and build the Medici library within the preexisting complex of monastic buildings. Reconstructs the sequence of events in Michelangelo's development of the site, relating his various schemes to contemporary urban design in Florence.
