Studies struggles among three centers of power in the region of Modena in the 10th-12th cs.: the bishop and diocese of Modena, the abbey of Nonantola, and the Canossa dynasty (especially Matilde). Notes that by the early 12th c. the city predominated over the other two, which casts light on the context for the building of the cathedral of Modena.
