Evidence of women's participation in gardening is gathered from 18th c. advice books on gardening, articles in 18th c. women's magazines, women's travel accounts, letters and diaries, and flower books in country house libraries. Womens' active role in landscape design, usually regarded as a male preserve, is affirmed.
