Analyzes the nature of visual evidence for African history. Argues that the illustrations of Arab and European reports should be considered not as documents but as illustrations based on European prototypes. Draws attention to the example of six early 17th c. Dutch drawings (four in the Biblioteca medicea-laurenziana in Florence, and two in the Kupferstichkabinett in Dresden) representing the Hottentots of the Cape of Good Hope; shows that the figures are based on European models but that the rendering of costume, ornaments, and weapons is accurate; also notes that these drawings provided the models for all the iconography of the Hottentots between the 17th and the 19th cs.
