Study of the series of sculptures of famous French men commissioned by d'Angiviller as part of a program of four statues and eight to 10 history paintings ordered every other year, 1777-1793, for the Grand Gallery of the Louvre (Paris). Examines the relationship of the series of famous men to contemporary competitions for the Prize in Eloquence of the Académie française (Paris) for eulogies of great men from French history, and places these in the context of the political struggle between royalists and reformists in the Parlement.
