Abstract (en)
Analyzes anomalies within the canon of 18th c. print series of the prodigal son, apparent in two sets by John Raphael Smith: History of the Prodigal Son, 1775, and Laetitia, 1789. Considers English prototypes and identifies the immediate visual source as a set after Sébastien Le Clerc II, 1751. Ascribes the popularity of these prints to their correspondence to changing patterns in family life.
