Argues that Lawrence's portraits (1790s) of John Philip Kemble in historical roles reflect his aspiration to the higher genre of history painting, and in this connection examines views on portraiture held by Reynolds and at the Royal Academy (London), and discusses the contemporary political context of the English theater.
