Abstract (en)
Suggests that Richard de Saint-Non commissioned from Fragonard ca.1760 (during the latter's first Italian trip) two large landscapes similar to a pair of red chalk drawings titled Le jeu de la palette and La balançoire (Frankfurt, Städelsches Kunstinstitut). The sole surviving remnant of the pendant paintings is Fragonard's Le jeu de la palette (Game of Battlegore) in Chambéry which is demonstrably a fragment of a larger canvas (Musée d'Art et d'Histoire). Identifies the paintings in a 1792 inventory of Saint-Non's collection. Discusses the games depicted.
