Abstract (en)

Presents new evidence casting light on Borromini's Portuguese patron, a nobleman who served as Spanish ambassador in Rome, ca.1631-1641. Surveys Castel Rodrigo's career and his activity as a patron and collector in Rome, and focuses on his (unrealized) funerary chapel in S. Bento, Lisbon, for which he commissioned the architectural design from Borromini, and the tombs from François Duquesnoy. (Appendices with Castel Rodrigo's will (1630) and a codicil of 1651 that refers to the tombs, then in crates in Livorno and Lisbon.)
