Argues that non-Italian elements of the intarsia decoration of the 16th c. inlaid wooden portable desk known as the Gonzaga scrittoio (Modena, Galleria Estense) derive from contemporary German furniture; proposes that both German and Lombard examples have a common source in Spanish desks; and suggests the influence of the architectural decoration of some German models on the development of Florentine desks.
