Papers from the symposium held 8-9 Mar 1985 at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts of the National Gallery (Washington, DC), addressing the issue of originality and copying in Western art, mainly Renaissance to the present. The reviewer argues that such study should be grounded in study of the theory of imitation and acknowledgment of many kinds of imitation, grounded in a scrupulously historical reading of the evidence, in order to get beyond uncritical use of the label "copy".
