Looks at Pepys's diaries 1660-1669 for information of three types: specific references to known works of art and contemporary artists in England and Holland; Pepys's general appreciation of the arts which is that of a well-connected but modestly cultivated member of the upper middle class; and the many references to the circumstances of daily life that place genre paintings and other contemporary pictures into fresh perspective.
