Abstract (en)

Discusses a crucifix which consists of a plaster cast on a wooden cross. The object was made in 1801 under the direction of Banks (London, Royal Academy). Banks, working together with Benjamin West and Richard Cosway, had devised an experiment whereby the corpse of a convict (who had been executed by hanging) was nailed to a cross. Casts were then made of the body in this state and flayed. Comments on Banks's interest in anatomy.
